Most people need a series of laser hair removal sessions, not a single visit.
So how many laser hair removal sessions is that? The American Academy of Dermatology says “most patients need 2 to 6 laser treatments,” while Mayo Clinic says “most people need 4 to 8 treatments for best results.”
At Catara Med Spa, there is no single number that fits everyone.
For laser hair removal in Algonquin, IL, your provider sets your number at consultation and spaces sessions about 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Why One Session Is Not Enough
Hair grows in cycles, and not every follicle is active at the same time.
That one fact is why laser hair removal is planned as a series.
The laser is drawn to melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. Energy travels down the pigmented hair shaft toward the follicle at the base.
Sessions are spaced to meet hair in an active growth phase.
Each visit reaches the hairs that are active at that moment, so later visits catch the ones that were resting.
The first session is only a start. The American Academy of Dermatology says you can expect about a 10% to 25% reduction in hair after the first treatment.
Treated hair does not vanish on the spot. It sheds over the days and weeks after a session.
Change builds across the series rather than appearing after one visit.
At our Algonquin location, we deliver laser hair removal with GentleMax Pro technology.
What Changes Your Number of Sessions
Your provider sets your session count based on three things.
- Your hair: the laser works on the pigment in hair, so your hair color shapes how your plan is built.
- Your skin: your skin tone matters too, for the same reason.
- The area being treated: we treat the face, chest, back, arms, underarms, legs, and bikini area, and areas can be combined in one appointment. Your provider plans around the areas you want addressed.
Some hair and skin color combinations respond differently than others.
That is why a friend’s number may not match yours, and why the consultation comes first.
At that visit, your provider looks at your hair and skin and talks through what you are hoping to change.
They decide whether laser hair removal is an appropriate service for you before anything is scheduled. If it is, they set the number of sessions and the spacing with you.
If a treatment isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you.
How Far Apart Laser Hair Removal Sessions Are
Sessions are generally spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart.
The American Academy of Dermatology gives the same window, and Mayo Clinic describes treatments scheduled several weeks apart.
That spacing lets your next visit meet hair in an active growth phase.
After each session, your provider goes over aftercare with you and, when you are working through a series, schedules your next appointment.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Most people describe it as warmth with a snapping feeling, often compared to a rubber band against the skin.
Mayo Clinic describes a similar quick snapping sensation.
You wear protective eyewear while your provider passes the handpiece over the area.
Tell your provider if you are uncomfortable during a session so they can adjust how they work.
There is no required downtime. The treated area may feel warm and sensitive and can look pink right after a session.
This usually settles on its own. If the area feels warm, a cooling product such as aloe vera can be applied.
What to Do Between Sessions
A few habits between visits keep your series on track.
- Shave before each visit: shave the area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment, so the laser meets the follicle rather than hair above the skin.
- Skip waxing, plucking, and threading: the hair root has to be present for the laser to work, so shave instead.
- Stay out of the sun: avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and products that make skin more sensitive to light, before and after appointments.
- Skip the tan: a recent tan or sunburn means your provider will reschedule you, because tanned skin raises the risk of a pigment change.
- Go easy on treated skin: set aside shaving, exfoliating, and other abrasive care while the area is still sensitive.
- Come in with clean skin: arrive with clean, bare skin in the treatment area, free of oils, creams, and lotions.
- Mention your medications: some medications increase sensitivity to light. Your prescribing clinician is the right person to advise you, so tell your provider what they say.

Will the Hair Come Back?
Laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction, not a promise that every hair is gone for good.
The American Academy of Dermatology puts it this way: “Most patients remain hair free for months or even years.”
It adds: “To keep the area free of hair, a patient may need maintenance laser treatments.”
Mayo Clinic notes that hair can still grow back, and some people may need follow-up treatments over time to keep hair growth under control.
Results vary. Whether you return for maintenance, and when, is something your provider decides with you based on your hair, your skin, and the area treated.
If Laser Is Not the Right Fit
Your consultation tells you whether laser hair removal suits your hair and skin.
If it does not, we also offer waxing and sugaring in Algonquin, IL.
Waxing and sugaring lift hair out at the root, so they are an alternative to laser, not something to do between laser sessions. Your provider can talk through which option fits you.
Laser Hair Removal Session FAQs
Can I wax between laser sessions?
No. The hair root has to be present for the laser to work, so shave instead and tell your provider what you have been doing.
How long is each session?
About 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the area. A small area takes about 15 minutes, and larger or combined areas take up to about 60.
Will I need touch-up sessions later?
Some people do. The American Academy of Dermatology and Mayo Clinic both say maintenance or follow-up treatments may be needed, and your provider tells you when maintenance makes sense.
