Microneedling Aftercare: What to Do and Avoid, Day by Day

November 3, 2026

Microneedling aftercare comes down to a few simple windows: stay out of direct sun for 48 hours, wait 24 hours before mineral-based makeup or tinted sunscreen, skip harsh skincare products for 5 days, and let any flaking shed on its own.

Below, we walk through it day by day for clients of Catara Med Spa in Algonquin, IL. It follows the post-care steps on our microneedling in Algonquin, IL page, and your provider reviews your aftercare with you before you leave.

The good news: most people return to normal activities within a day or two.

Why Aftercare Matters After Microneedling

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses fine, sterile needles to create tiny channels in the skin.

Those micro-injuries prompt your skin’s natural healing response, which encourages collagen and elastin production. Aftercare is how you protect your skin while those channels heal.

What to Do After Microneedling

These steps come from our post-care instructions. Keep them up while your skin heals.

  • Cleanse gently and use a basic, fragrance-free moisturizer.
  • Wear sunscreen every day once the first 48 hours have passed.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase.
  • Let flaking shed on its own.

What to Avoid After Microneedling

Most of these come with a time window, so the list gets shorter as the days go by.

  • Direct sun for the first 48 hours.
  • Makeup for the first 24 hours. After that, you can wear mineral-based makeup or tinted sunscreen.
  • Scrubs, retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs and BHAs for 5 days. Wait for your provider’s go-ahead before restarting retinol and exfoliants.
  • Strenuous workouts and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Touching your face while your skin heals.

Microneedling Day by Day: The Healing Stages

Skin heals at its own pace, so what you see may vary a little. The aftercare windows stay the same.

Treatment Day

Right after treatment, your skin may look red and feel like a mild sunburn. You may also notice pinpoint bleeding, mild swelling or slight bruising.

At home, cleanse gently, keep makeup off, and stay out of direct sun. Skip strenuous workouts and heavy sweating.

That night, sleep on a clean pillowcase and try not to touch your face.

Day 1

Once 24 hours have passed, you can wear mineral-based makeup or tinted sunscreen. Some redness may still show, since it can last 1 to 3 days.

Keep skipping harsh products and direct sun for now. The pause on strenuous workouts and heavy sweating runs 24 to 48 hours, so follow your provider’s timing.

Day 2

At the 48-hour mark, your break from direct sun ends. From here on, wear sunscreen every day to protect your healing skin.

By now, the 24 to 48 hour pause on strenuous workouts and heavy sweating is over too. If your provider gave you a different time, follow theirs.

Days 3 to 5

Redness can last 1 to 3 days. Some dryness, flaking or peeling can follow during the first week.

Let flaking shed on its own. Keep cleansing gently and using a basic, fragrance-free moisturizer.

Keep scrubs, retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs and BHAs off your skin for the full 5 days.

Days 6 and 7

The 5 days without scrubs, retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs and BHAs are behind you. Even so, wait for your provider’s go-ahead before restarting retinol and exfoliants.

Some flaking during the first week is expected. Keep up your daily sunscreen.

Weeks 2 and Beyond

Results build gradually as your skin heals. Many clients notice changes within a few weeks, with continued improvement over several months.

Keep wearing sunscreen every day. Results may vary.

How Much Microneedling Downtime to Expect

Aftercare After Microneedling with PRP

At Catara, you can book microneedling on its own or with PRP prepared from your own blood. The visit is a little different.

For Microneedling with PRP, a small amount of blood is drawn first, similar to a routine lab test. It goes into a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma while your treatment begins.

For Microneedling with PRP, a small blood sample is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma.

The PRP is applied during or right after the microneedling, and the visit usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes.

Our microneedling page lists one set of post-care steps and does not split them by option, so ask your provider whether anything differs for your visit. You may also have some bruising or soreness where the blood was drawn.

Before your next Microneedling with PRP visit, drink plenty of water, eat a normal meal, and skip alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. Tell your provider about every medication and supplement you take, and do not stop a prescribed medication unless your prescribing clinician says it is safe.

Microneedling with PRP on the scalp is a separate service, PRP microneedling for hair growth in Algonquin, IL, so ask your provider about its aftercare.

If You Had RF Microneedling Instead

RF microneedling in Algonquin, IL is a separate treatment with its own aftercare. It uses Sylfirm X, which pairs fine needles with radio frequency energy.

After an RF session, a proprietary serum is applied right away to support healing and hydrate the skin. You may have some redness, and many clients return to work the same day.

Between sessions, your provider may recommend a take-home post-care kit to calm and hydrate the skin. Follow the RF post-care your provider gives you.

When to Call Us

Infection is uncommon but possible any time the skin barrier is broken. Contact us if you notice spreading redness, warmth, drainage, increasing pain, or a fever.

If you simply have a question about how your skin is healing, call us at (847) 658-1300. We would rather hear from you than have you guess.

Planning Your Next Session

Microneedling is usually planned as a series, and your provider sets the number of sessions and the spacing with you.

Before your next visit, avoid sun exposure. Reschedule if you develop a fever, an infection, or an open sore in the treatment area.

If you have an active acne breakout in the treatment area, tell your provider. They may postpone treatment until the inflammation has cleared.

Microneedling results don’t last forever, so many clients plan maintenance sessions. How soon you come back depends on your skin health, age, sun exposure, lifestyle and whether you have regular or RF microneedling.

In our experience, clients 50 and over tend to come back for maintenance at 9 to 12 months, and younger clients at 12 to 15 months. Your provider discusses your timing at your consultation, and results may vary.

When you are ready, book your next session and we will plan it around your skin.
