RF microneedling is a skin treatment that pairs microneedling, which creates tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin, with radiofrequency energy that heats the deeper layers. Together, they prompt your skin’s natural repair response, which supports collagen and elastin. At Catara Med Spa in Algonquin, IL, we perform RF microneedling with the Sylfirm X device, and every plan starts with a consultation.

How RF Microneedling Works
Microneedling on its own uses fine needles to create small channels in the skin. RF microneedling sends radiofrequency energy through those needles, so controlled heat reaches the deeper layers of skin where collagen remodeling happens.
In our video, Jeanne Foote, Licensed Aesthetician, Operating Owner and Head of Operations at Catara, describes it as two treatments for one: the micro-injuries and the heat both work on collagen and elastin production.
The heat is also what creates the immediate tightening effect many clients notice after a session. The longer-term change comes more slowly, as your skin rebuilds collagen over a series of treatments.
Why Catara Uses Sylfirm X
Catara uses the Sylfirm X platform exclusively for RF microneedling. Unlike standard microneedling devices, Sylfirm X uses dual-depth radiofrequency to target deeper layers of skin with precision.
Sylfirm X is designed with pulsed-wave technology and non-insulated needles, a design intended to limit the heat delivered to the skin’s surface. Our providers assess whether it fits your skin type during your consultation.
We treat the face, neck, decollete and under-eye area, including the jawline. Sylfirm X is gentle enough for the thin skin under the eyes.

Regular Microneedling vs RF Microneedling
Both treatments use fine needles. The difference is the radiofrequency.
With RF microneedling, the energy creates controlled heat in the deeper layers of skin as the needles work. That heat drives collagen remodeling that needling alone cannot reach, and it produces an immediate tightening effect that needling alone does not.

If you are weighing the two, our microneedling in Algonquin, IL page covers the non-RF option. Your consultation is the right place to decide which one fits your skin and your goals.
What RF Microneedling May Help With
RF microneedling is best suited to concerns like these:
- Fine lines and wrinkles, including crow’s feet and smile lines
- Acne scars
- Enlarged pores and rough skin texture
- Skin laxity, including along the jawline and neck
- Crepey skin
- Neck and decollete creases
- Uneven texture and tone
In the video, Jeanne also mentions sagging skin and jowls, rosacea, scars on the body, and stretch marks as concerns it may help with.

Results vary from person to person, and your provider will be honest about which of these apply to you. If a treatment isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you. If there’s a better option, we’ll explain why.
What the Research Says
A 2021 review in the journal Dermatologic Surgery looked only at higher-quality studies of RF microneedling: randomized, split-body or blinded studies with original data on people.
The authors included 42 studies. Fourteen looked at skin rejuvenation, 7 at acne scars, 6 at acne, 5 each at stretch marks and underarm sweating, 2 at melasma, and 1 each at rosacea, cellulite and hair loss.
They concluded that RF microneedling is an effective intervention that can be used repeatedly and safely, in combination with other treatments, and in people with darker skin tones.
They also found that the collagen remodeling it triggers is slow and progressive, and continues to improve even 6 months after treatment. A condition being studied does not mean Catara treats it with Sylfirm X, so ask us about your specific concern.

Who Is a Good Candidate?
RF microneedling suits men and women, typically age 30 and up, who notice early signs of aging, sun damage, large pores or uneven texture.
It is also a fit for clients seeking help with acne scarring or crepey skin, and for anyone who wants natural-looking firming without injectables or surgery.
When to Wait or Talk to Your Provider First
RF microneedling is a medical procedure, not a spa facial. Tell your provider about any of the following so your candidacy can be reviewed:
- An active infection, open wound, cold sore or active inflammatory skin condition in the treatment area (treatment is postponed until it heals)
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (Catara does not perform RF microneedling during either)
- A pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device, or metal implants in the treatment area
- A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
- Isotretinoin, now or recently
- An undiagnosed lesion, a suspicious mole or a history of skin cancer in the treatment area
- A bleeding disorder, or any treatment that affects how your blood clots
- Uncontrolled diabetes, an autoimmune condition affecting the skin, or a condition that slows wound healing
RF Microneedling and Skin of Color
We treat skin of color with RF microneedling. Because radiofrequency energy heats the skin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a potential risk for darker skin types, so careful planning and technique matter.
For clients with a higher PIH risk, we use a shallow needle depth and the pulsed-wave setting, provide calming take-home post-care, and start a tyrosinase inhibitor 2 weeks before treatment to reduce the potential for PIH.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Every plan starts with a Catara Med Spa Contour Blueprint consultation. We develop your Blueprint together, and you leave with a physical plan that maps your daily, monthly and quarterly steps toward healthy skin.
- Before your visit: avoid alcohol and THC for 24 hours, arrive well hydrated and come with a clean face. If you take an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, pause it only if your prescribing clinician confirms it is safe.
- Comfort: we apply topical numbing before treatment.
- Treatment: the Sylfirm X session itself takes about 30 minutes.
- Finish: we apply a proprietary serum to support healing and hydrate your skin.
Recovery and Aftercare
Downtime is typically minimal. You may have redness after treatment, and many clients return to work the same day.
Many clients resume daily activities and normal product use within 24 hours. Between sessions, a take-home post-care kit can help calm and hydrate your skin, and we will recommend the right options at your visit.
Follow the aftercare plan your provider gives you, and check with us before adding anything new to your routine.
Potential Side Effects
- Redness and a feeling of tightness after treatment
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), a potential side effect for darker skin types, triggered by heat from the radiofrequency
- Reported outcomes with RF microneedling also include burns, scarring, loss of fat under the skin and nerve injury
Careful candidacy screening, conservative settings and treatment by a trained provider are how Catara works to reduce these risks. Your consultation covers whether RF microneedling is right for you.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
The radiofrequency creates an immediate tightening effect you may notice after your first session. The deeper change builds over time as collagen remodels.
Most clients see the best results with 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. The 2021 review above also found remodeling still improving 6 months after treatment, so patience pays off. Your plan is confirmed at your consultation, and results vary.
FAQs About RF Microneedling
Is RF microneedling painful?
We apply topical numbing before treatment for comfort. Your provider reviews what the treatment feels like and answers your questions at your consultation.
How much is RF microneedling?
It depends on your treatment plan, which we build with you at your consultation. Our RF microneedling cost page has more detail.
Can RF microneedling treat under-eye wrinkles?
Yes. Sylfirm X is gentle enough for the thin skin under the eyes.
Is there downtime after RF microneedling?
Typically very little. You may have some redness, and many clients return to work the same day.
Is RF microneedling the same as regular microneedling?
No. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency heat, which reaches deeper layers of skin and produces an immediate tightening effect that needling alone does not.
How long does an RF microneedling session take?
The treatment itself takes about 30 minutes, after topical numbing is applied.
